Brooks Oliver
(Father of Judy Oliver Suiter and father-in-law of Dennis Suiter) From the mid 50s to mid 70s, Brooks was the voice of WCMT Sports. When he began announcing, there was no live broadcast for all games were taped and played back later. You may remember the Saturday morning playbacks of sports events. On October 1, 1968, WCMT became an FM Station. The first live broadcast was a Martin High School football Homecoming game on October 4, 1968 when Martin won 51 to 7 over Sharon. This game was part of The Streak. On May 7, 1969, Brooks did the first live baseball game at UTM when they defeated Lambuth 6 to 5. John Kent, another announcer, was along with Brooks. Brooks closed every sports event with this saying: Not everyone can play a sport, but everyone can be a sport. |
